THIRTEEN

They waited at the air field for nearly an hour. There was tea, and Raoul was a gracious host. He regaled Elly with stories of other such arrivals, and of how they’d managed to slip the supplies and equipment through customs that had facilitated the creation of the Bessler Generators. Elly was surprised at how much the man knew of their secrets, but, seeing her consternation, Benjamin explained.

“Raoul is our liaison with the local government. Someone 'in country' had to know what our plans were, and Raoul came highly recommended. Not many in the world enjoy the level of trust we place in him. He and your grandmother were very close.”

“Indeed,” Raoul said. “I owe your family, and your country, a great deal. My education, for instance, and my career.”

“Raoul was one of your grandmother’s ‘projects’.” Cynthia explained. “She visited Ecuador many times, and not just to work on the complex. When she was here, Raoul caught her attention, and held it. His family was in a bad state, and she helped.”

Elly guessed he was in his late teens, until he removed the sunglasses. His eyes were deep, lined with small creases at the corners, and she saw that his youthful frame carried more years than it seemed to.

“This is Pedro,” Raoul told them. “He will get you through the jungle as quickly as possible. They are waiting for you at the plant, and the alternate entrance will be open when you arrive.”

Raoul stepped forward then and took Elly’s hand. As she watched, blushing, he bowed and brushed her fingers with his lips. “I hope we will get the opportunity to share stories soon, Ms. Kassel,” he said.

“Elly,” she murmured.

He rose, and nodded. “Elly,” he agreed.

Then they were moving again, and everything blurred. They hurried out a side door, where their new vehicle pulled up quickly. Their baggage had already been transferred, quickly and efficiently packed into the rear of the Jeep. The canvas roof had been snapped into place to obscure the passengers. With a deep breath, Elly stepped up onto the running board and felt strong hands draw her into the back seat, where she sat, sandwiched between Benjamin and Cynthia. Pedro, the driver, sat alone in
